Goose barnacles are a major problem. The fouling causes sailing boats to go slower and motorboats to have higher fuel consumption. They do not thrive in freshwater but our brackish water in the Quark (salinity just over 3 per mille) is salty enough for them to grow.
Barnacles are difficult to remove from the hull once they have grown for a few weeks and their shells have hardened. Dealing with them while they are still small and soft is easier. For example, a large part of them can be brushed off while the boat is in the water if the brush has a long handle. Those who are lucky enough to have a lake or river within reach can leave the boat there for a few days and wait for the barnacles to die.
The barnacle warning is a service where you can receive alerts via SMS or mobile as soon as growth begins, giving you a chance to remove them in time. The service is based on boat clubs and other interested parties placing test plates and regularly checking if growth has started.
